King County Nurses Association (KCNA) is proud to help ensure the future of nursing in our community by offering scholarships to qualified nursing students. The deadline for 2009-10 scholarships is March 1, 2009. Please download the form below.

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION SHEET & APPLICATION
Scholarship Application 2009

PURPOSE

  • To provide financial assistance to qualified students who have a permanent address, or are currently enrolled in a nursing program in King County and are preparing for a career as a Registered Nurse, or to RN’s returning for an advanced degree in nursing or a related field.
  • To encourage and provide for continuing diversity within the nursing organization.

TYPES OF SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE

A total of ten scholarships of $1,500 each will be awarded in the spring of 2008 for the 2008-09 academic year. The scholarships will be from the following categories:

Basic Program: General scholarships will be awarded to students preparing for a career as a Registered Nurse. At least one of these Scholarships is designated for an ethnic minority student.

RN Baccalaureate (RNB) Program: Scholarships will be awarded to a Registered Nurse in a program leading to a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

Valerie Weiss, ARNP, MN, MA, Memorial Scholarship Award: Scholarships will be awarded to a current RN working toward an advanced degree in nursing or a related field. The award is given as a lasting legacy to an outstanding nurse whose professional commitment was an inspiration to her colleagues and patients alike.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

All Scholarships:
  • Maintain a minimum “B” average (3.0 grade point average).
  • Be currently enrolled in the State of Washington in a generic nursing program (accredited by NLNAC or CCNE) leading to initial licensure as a RN; OR a program for current RNs leading to a bachelor’s degree in nursing; OR a program leading to an advanced degree in nursing or a related field.
  • Maintain a permanent address in King County or be enrolled in a nursing program in King County.
Valerie Weiss Memorial Scholarship:
  • Demonstrate an exemplary commitment to the nursing profession through extracurricular professional activities.

AWARD CRITERIA

Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of:
  • Academic Performance
  • School Involvement
  • Community Involvement
  • Professional Activities

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  1. Application materials must be postmarked or hand delivered by March 1 to: King County Nurses Association, 4649 Sunnyside Avenue N. #224, Seattle, WA 98103.
  2. Scholarship application materials must include the following (NOTE: Incomplete applications will not be considered):
    1. Completed KCNA Scholarship Application (pages 1-4).
    2. Current college transcript that includes nursing courses and any prerequisites (a copy of the transcript is acceptable).
    3. Two letters of recommendation—one from an instructor (of nursing, if applicable) and one from a non-relative, such as a volunteer or work supervisor. If a nursing program director or dean is used as a reference, that person must provide a letter of recommendation in addition to completing application page 2, “Statement of Eligibility.”
    4. Current Resume or Curriculum Vitae (required for RNB Program and Valerie Weiss Memorial Scholarships; encouraged for Basic Program candidates.

GENERAL INFORMATION

  1. The KCNA Scholarship Committee will select scholarship recipients. All information will be held in strict confidence.
  2. This scholarship is a one-time award. New recipients will be selected yearly.
  3. Scholarship recipients will be notified by mail and will be honored at the KCNA Spring Banquet/Annual Meeting in May.
  4. Awards will be paid by the KCNA directly to the school of nursing attended by the recipients for application to his/her account.
