Get involved with homeless projects!
Executive Director's Message:
Hello! This column is usually called the “President’s Message” but Anne Poppe, KCNA President, is on vacation. In her absence, I am happy to provide some important updates.
First let me say something about the importance of professional associations for nurses. The profession of nursing is changing so much, so fast, and I strongly believe that one way for individuals to stay at the forefront of this change is to join with others in an association that represents shared interests.
This fall has been full of activity at KCNA, including:
• With WSNA, held two sessions of Creating a Culture of Safety, with great information and discussion about practice issues;
• Sponsored the Fall Nursing Sum- mit: Mental Health Issues, which demonstrated that more needs to be done to make sure RNs are educated and safe when working with these patients, and packed 400 cold kits for the homeless (in 16 minutes, 7 seconds — a new record!). Special thanks to the Sheraton Bellevue Hotel for sup- plying us with shampoo and soap for these kits.
• Actively supported the Sigma Theta Tau 50th Anniversary event and March of Dimes Nurse of the Year Awards event;
• Paid two Community Grants and 12 scholarships of $2,500 each (we plan to offer 15 awards of $2,500 each in 2013).
This year’s Member Survey provided some interesting information for the KCNA Board to consider as they tweak our Strategic Plan. The Plan doesn’t just sit on a shelf, but is reviewed regularly in an effort to meet the needs of our members.
Many of you expressed an interest in volunteer opportunities and more options for nursing continuing education. We will continue to work hard to provide ways for members to be involved (many options are included in this edition of Advocate).
KCNA recently held a Financial Review — a chance to take a closer look at how we conduct our financial business. The Finance Committee developed a process for the Review and implemented it this fall. The purpose of the Financial Review is to conduct an inspection of the books and records and a review of financial management practices of KCNA. The review is done annually to assure KCNA members of appropriate stewardship of funds. The review was conducted by two members, and they had only minor recommendations and gave KCNA a “well done” review.
Did you know 2013 is the 110th Anniversary of KCNA? It’s quite a milestone and we are planning to celebrate all year long! The focus of the celebration will be on how KCNA has made a difference — for nurses, for nursing and for the community.
We are hoping to see you at one of our events in 2013. Until then, we wish you a happy new year. It’s going to be a great year!
P.S. If you know a nurse (you probably know several) who far exceeds expectations — on the job, in the community or in the profession — please nominate him or her for a KCNA Shining Star Award. Award winners will be honored at the Annual Meeting & Spring Banquet on May 9. To complete a nomination, visit www.kcnurses.org (deadline April 1).
