KCNA's President's Message

Here's What's Happening!

We just awarded the 2010 Shining Star Nurse Awards at the King County Nurses Association Annual Meeting on May 6. Congratulations to Frankie Manning and Antwinett Lee! Student scholarship recipients were also honored that evening with ten nursing students from local schools each receiving $2,000.

I want to thank the KCNA members who attending the February 16 District Meeting and helped pack 200 cold kits for the Real Change vendors. We had a sell-out event with over 50 members and nursing students! Our guest speaker, Calvin Turner, from Real Change, was inspiring and gave everyone a unique perspective on what it's like to be homeless. The 200 cold kits were distributed to the vendors in February and we received a wonderful thank you. Please support Real Change by purchasing a newspaper for $1.00. Vendors keep 65 cents per paper and have an opportunity to earn some money.

Did you know that KCNA supports local nonprofits through charitable donations? Each year the Finance Committee selects the recipients, largely grassroots organizations making a difference in King County. Donations range from $150-300 each. The recipients for 2010 are: Food Lifeline, First Place (homeless school), Treehouse (foster children), YouthCare (homeless teens), Northwest Harvest, Noel House (homeless women), Market Foundation (low income clinic), Solid Ground (food bank), One4One (homeless tent city), Nursing Scholarships: Washington State Nurses Foundation, Filipino Nurses Association, Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses Association.

Finally, if you are interested in Nursing Practice issues, please contact KCNA to get involved. We are planning a fall event.

Thanks!

Pam
